Artist Statement
Many of my artworks focus on the complexity of the human psyche. They are an eclectic gathering of my thoughts and feelings on my own personal relationship between the world and myself. In some works I choose to reflect back to a dysfunctional childhood with fondness and humor. In other works I prefer to be more ominous and concentrate on more serious subject matters such as addiction and self-criticism.
I predominately work in self-portraiture and color plays an important role. My creative practice spans traditional photography, digital manipulation, and animation and web art. While I am most attached to still images the concentration of other practices, such as animation and video has only strengthened my photography by allowing me to think about spatial concerns in time. Working with lens-based media, I have found that by working with many media approaches it has only enhanced my photography.
I am very interested in the different experimental processes in photography, which give you unpredictable outcomes. Which is why I have been focusing on the use of toy cameras and the Lomography cameras, which are deliberately low-tech and inexpensively constructed. This attraction to low-tech production links to my interest in nostalgia.
My main focus has been on instant films. Instant film has a very special charm about it. For many people instant film has a nostalgic feel that reminisces their childhood. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t remember shaking a Polaroid at least once in his or her lifetime. In this digital age, there is something really special about holding the picture you just took in the palm of your hand.
I find that by stripping down to the fundamentals of photography not only have I gained a better appreciation for the medium, but my digital work is also enhanced. By gaining a simplistic approach to photography I have been able to refocus myself
